Guild Announces Learning and Performance Ecosystems Research Report by News Editor

“Ecosystems are critical, Foreman says, to moving training closer to the workflow, so it’s available when needed.”

Ecosystems is a word that’s been bandied about a lot lately. What are they? What are their primary components? And how are they currently being used?

The eLearning Guild’s new research report, Learning and Performance Ecosystems: Current State and Challenges, explores the subject in depth. Author Steve Foreman defines an ecosystem as “comprised of multi-faceted learning and performance options that enhance the environments in which we work and learn … by connecting people and supporting them with a broad range of content, processes, and technologies to drive performance.” Ecosystems are critical, Foreman says, to moving training closer to the workflow, so it’s available when needed.

In the report, Foreman explores the results of a survey of eLearning Guild members that focused on topics such as how strongly various forms of learning are sponsored, whether they’re supported effectively by technology, and if they’re effectively managed.

Additionally, the report examines the six components of a learning and performance ecosystem, the three building blocks of learning and performance ecosystems, and the key challenges organizations face in developing innovative learning and performance solutions.

Foreman also explores organizational culture and readiness, since they’re central to whether an ecosystem is successful and sustainable. What did respondents feel were the biggest obstacles to implementing a learning and performance ecosystem? You might be surprised.
